Xiao Lesson 4

An Ancient Chinese Melody

You may want to look at Lesson 3 before attempting to play this piece.

The title of this piece, "The Whole River is Red," refers to an ancient Chinese poetic formal tradition. The song commemorates a Chinese military hero of antiquity, Yue Fei. Click here for a recording of the piece performed on a xiao in G. When playing this piece, exaggerate the dynamics (changes in loudness) to make the music strong and emotional. If you have a xiao in F, play the piece a whole step lower than written here.
